Scholarly Activity During Pediatric Residency- What are the Expectations at CHAM?

All residents are required to participate in scholarship by the ACGME. Residents can participate in many kinds of scholarly activity to fulfill this requirement, including but not limited to writing up case reports, educational scholarship, quality improvement projects, clinical research, and bench research. Residency is a time to build skills in research and quality improvement and residents will have varying degrees of completion for their projects. Many residents are involved in studies that will then get passed on to other residents; some residents may present their work at local, regional, or national meetings or publish it in peer-reviewed journals.

All Categorical and Social Pediatrics residents are expected to present at our Pediatric Resident Research Weeks at the end of their PGY-3 year. Residents are supported in this process through our Longitudinal Research Curriculum presented as a “boot camp” during Academic Half Day. Lecture topics include the basics of study design, research here at CHAM, research ethics, writing an IRB, QI, and developing a research question.

Residents seek out research mentors in a variety of ways. They can email attendings about an ongoing project, email division chiefs and/or fellowship directors about ongoing projects within their divisions, form their own research question and reach out to mentors with similar interests, pick a project from a graduating resident that they hear about during the Pediatric Resident Research Weeks, or respond to emails sent out by the program leadership looking for resident involvement in a study. They can also reach out to program leadership to further brainstorm appropriate contacts.

Residents have been awarded funding from national organization such as AAP CATCH grants and Resident Research grants from the CHAM Department of Pediatrics. The residency will support a resident traveling to present at a conference with up to $1000 during residency.

outside opportunities

This is a list of conferences for abstract submissions, research grants, and other opportunities that may be of interest to pediatrics residents. Please consult this list to be aware of deadlines, so that you can prepare ahead! Deadlines are approximate and based on prior years, so make sure to research exact deadlines and requirements for each opportunity. Email the Peds Chiefs if there are any opportunities we should add!

CONFERENCE Attendance

If you were accepted to present a poster or presentation at a conference, congratulations! Please email the program directors— they will be happy to hear the good news.

There is funding available for residents who are presenting at a conference as first author. Each resident can use up to $1,000 related to conference expenditures. You can access these funds by paying and submitting afterward for reimbursement, and/or by booking your travel plans via Egencia. Egencia is an account connected with a Montefiore credit card, and hotels/flights booked through Egencia are approved by a Montefiore administrator and then paid for directly by Montefiore, without your credit card. We recommend Egencia when possible.

In order to set up an Egencia account, email Ms. Gladys Colon (glacolon@montefiore.org) to request an account, and include the following information:
